The Common Tern is smaller, more slender, and built with a sharp dagger-like bill that makes the hooked bill of a gull look almost clumsy by comparison. Elegant in the air, precise on the water, and deeply underappreciated by anyone who dismisses it with a glance and moves on.

This illustration was a small experiment — I started working with a warm brick color for the linework and ended up back at black. Sometimes the original instinct is the right one. The Tern seemed to agree.

Perched on a dock post against a warm olive ground, this one has a quiet, contemplative energy that I find endlessly appealing.
