Some birds stop you in your tracks. The Mourning Dove is not usually one of them.
And that's exactly the point.
This bird lives in my yard and frequents our feeders year round. Reserved, graceful, quietly observant. I can hear one cooing outside as I write this. And yet when I sat down to really draw one — to look closely at that extraordinary teal eye ring, the soft iridescence in the feathers, the gentle tilt of the head — I was genuinely stopped in my tracks.
Sometimes the most beautiful things are the ones we've stopped seeing.
