I'll be honest — it took a demonstration at the Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences to fully convert me. Did you know the Turkey Vulture's nasal cavity is open straight through, specifically to help detect the scent of decay from over a mile away? That their long middle "toe" is designed to clean the passage after feeding? That the bald head — the thing that makes them look so strange — exists to prevent bacteria from clinging to feathers during long feeding sessions and to regulate temperature?
Every single thing about this bird is a solution to a problem. Pure, elegant, unsentimental functionality.
